I've just put up 0.74.0.5 which .... drumroll..... defaults controls to WASD with ENTER to chat. E is used as an alternative to CTRL to open buildings etc, R is closes the windows. Theres an option to change back to the old (BEST! :] ) method on ESC then O.
I haven't had much chance to test all the implications of this change yet, and I've got various things on today that'll keep me occupied a bit, so if anyone could have a look about and see if there are any problems with it, lemme know.

Fantastic idea!
The only thing I would change is the backspace behaviour when there hasn't been any text entered. If you press enter and type some text and hold backspace it will delete the text and then exit typing mode. If you just press enter (or T), and don't type anything but try to backspace, it doesn't exit typing mode. Might be intentional but perhaps it should also exit typing mode?
