Discussion: Production efficiency

As of year 10 AD (alpha development  ) we, the citizens of Lanbury are mostly poor farmers and service industry workers. However, despite our lack of education and technology we are seemingly able to produce resources with the streamlined efficiency of a late-stage capitalist society.

As an example, the farm produces 500 tea leaves per worker. So with two workers that's 1000 leaves per year. At ten leaves per tea that's 100 tea from one harvest. Doing a simple calculation of tea in my house (20% bonus) it appears we can live ~20hrs per tea (realtime).

So 100 tea x 20hrs/per = 2000hrs of life per tea harvest.

With 15 active users (listed on World News) that is 133hrs per user of life if evenly distributed (5.5 days realtime).

One year is 2.5 days, so at current population levels we are only using half of one harvest per year from one single farms production. In effect, this is stagnating the economy, as almost all resources produce more than we need for the population right now (and there is no reason to leave invest in a building).

In an early-stage society one would expect resources to be scarce and technology limited, stunting efficiency. One way we could implement this, and help move the economy forward, would be to reduce default efficiency and add technology upgrades to buildings that require fancy later-stage resources to construct that would improve efficiency as the society grows.

Would love to hear thoughts and start a discussion on this!

I really need to run the numbers on this... Given the rate tea disappears I think we might be a lil worse off than it might seem.
I like the idea of efficiency improving with technology improvements, however at this stage I worry about that itd make tea more expensive and become a drain on our limited initial wealth. Certainly one for the list tho.
Economy wise things have moved on a bit, and so invest is a bit more active now.

I agree that "In an early-stage society one would expect resources to be scarce and technology limited" and in a way that is the case.. everyone has been focused on whether the next harvest can keep them alive for a few more days and no-one is flying around in biplanes, so perhaps it aint so far off the mark..

Great to have your thoughts. I think that, although at some scales its a slow game, some things do move on in important ways and these threads are an excellent snapshot of how that plays out. They will be an invaluable resource when we get to BC. (Beta community? :] )
